OWN hosts 15th annual Westside Neighbors Picnic July 18 at Community Center

After some funding uncertainty earlier in the year, the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) is going ahead with its annual picnic.
The event, in which OWN treats Westsiders to a barbecue, will be Saturday July 18 from noon to 2 p.m. on the grassy lawn outside the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St.
Attendees will be treated to grilled bratwursts and hotdogs, side dishes and lemonade. A band led by local musician John Wise is scheduled to be back for the fifth year. Tables and chairs will be set up on the lawn.
       Side dishes are welcome.
OWN represents residents in what the city calls the Westside Neighborhood Strategy Area (NSA). The Westside NSA consists essentially of the southern part of the 80904 zip code and northern part of 80905. A city policy change in the past year eliminated the funding OWN formerly received for neighborhood outreach - some of which helped pay for picnic costs. However, donors stepped forward to make the picnic possible, according to OWN President Welling Clark.
This will be the 15th year for the picnic, the fifth at the Community Center.
