Garden of Gods street paving scheduled nights from July 6 to end of month

Overnight milling and paving of the Garden of the Gods streets is scheduled to start July 6 and continue for about three weeks.
For the project, the park streets will close from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., a city press release states. The closures consist of Gateway Road, Juniper Way Loop, Garden Drive, Garden Lane, and Ridge Road.
“No vehicular, bicycle or pedestrian traffic will be permitted on the roadway during the nighttime milling and paving operation,” the release adds. “Recreational users and drivers using the roadway during the daytime may encounter grooved and uneven pavement throughout the three week project.”
The release continues: “Natural surface and concrete trails will remain open and available during normal park operating hours (5 a.m. to 11 p.m.). However, parking will not be available within the park during the paving operations, and trail users will need to park their vehicles outside the park if using the trails after 8 p.m. or before paving begins in the mornings.”
The work is being funded through the voter-approved 2C ballot measure. It established a .62 percent city sales tax over a five-year span, starting this year, dedicated to road improvements.
A city engineer has previously explained that the Garden of the Gods streets were last overlaid in 2001 and are beginning to show deterioration. He also said that the night work was necessary because of the heavy amount of tourist traffic during the summer.
The press release elaborates that the Garden's streets were chosen for the first year of 2C “because no utility or other repair work is required prior to paving, making it a shovel-ready project.”
