It’s ‘West Elementary’ ... for now

In April, needing a name for the new elementary that will go inside West Middle School, Terry Martinez (its principal-to-be) temporarily dubbed it “Westside Elementary.” He even used that monicker as a heading for newsletters he sent out to parents.

However, in the most recent School District 11 communications, it's being called “West Elementary” instead.
Asked last week about this slight change, Martinez explained that state school officials have since stipulated that because the physical site is “West,” the temporary school name must also be “West” (although “Westside” is still OK in the vernacular, he added).
In any case, it will only be for a year. A community process will be undertaken during the school year to determine a permanent name, Martinez said.
The D-11 Board of Education formed the new school as a part of a district-wide reutilization program. It will combine students from the former Buena Vista, Washington and Whittier schools.
Students from Pike, the other Westside elementary that has closed, have been put in new attendance areas, nearly all for Bristol or Jackson schools.
