Planned building demolitions limit canyon hikes

City-led trail hikes in Red Rock Canyon Open Space have been put on hold because of the demolition of several structures inside the property (see stories on Page 6).
The hikes had been occurring on the second and fourth Fridays of the month.
The demolition and related cleanup are part of an ongoing effort to get the property ready for public use - probably by this fall - according to officials with the Colorado Springs Parks Department.
People can still sign up for monthly canyon hikes led by the Trails and Open Space Coalition of the Pikes Peak Region. These are at 8 a.m. on the third Saturday of the month; the next one will be June 19. Reservations are necessary; the number is 633- 6884.
The canyon is temporarily closed to the public, except on sponsored hikes.
