5 free concerts in Bear Creek Park

       Five free evening concerts in Bear Creek Regional Park are scheduled this summer.
       Four will offer bands affiliated with the Pikes Peak Jazz & Swing Society, while the other will feature the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra in a tribute to the music of Journey, Foreigner and Kansas.
       Here is the complete line of scheduled performances:
  • June 12, 6 to 8 p.m., Thin Air Jazz.
  • July 24, 6 to 8 p.m., Swing Connection with Laura Davis.
  • July 27, 7:30 p.m., Pikes Peak Philharmonic.
  • Aug. 14, 6 to 8 p.m., BLT Quartet with Tony Guilizia.
  • Aug. 28, 6 to 8 p.m., USAF Academy Band, the Falconaires & Falconaires Alumni Band.
           Literacy volunteers sought
           The Children's Literacy Center is seeking volunteers, 14 years of age and older, to provide free one-to-one tutoring to children who are reading below grade level. “Tutor one child, two hours a week, and help that child become a successful reader,” states a press release from the Westside-based nonprofit.
           Training for new tutors will begin June 18, 2013. For more information, call 471-8672 or go to childrensliteracycenter.org.
           Girl Scout benefit hike
           Girl Scout Cadettes from Troop 4198 will host a “Burn Off the Girl Scout Cookies” benefit hike in Red Rock Canyon Sunday, June 9 at 1 p.m.
           Troop members are seeking donations from the public for their Silver Award Project and will be using the funds to buy trees and plant them in the Waldo Canyon Fire burn area with the Coalition for the Upper South Platte, a press release states.
           The meeting place for the hike will be the east end of the central parking lot by the trail sign and the bike park. But donations can also be accepted separately.
