Westside watercolor artist Martha Mans will sign copies of her first children's book Saturday June 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mountain Moppets, 2532 W. Colorado Ave.
Planned as the start of a trilogy, the illustrated work is titled “Gordon: The Tale of a Baby American Bison.”
According to a press release, the book tells “the story of a young, orphaned bison, and his journey of self-discovery on a ranch in the West, trying to find out what kind of animal he really is.”
The illustrations were inspired by views at the Medano/Zapata Ranch in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, where Mans is invited each year to paint the vistas and which has a herd of more than 2,500 American bison. “Two years ago when she was painting at the ranch, a baby bison was found in the ditch, along side a dirt road where its mother had abandoned it,” the release adds.
In 2006, Mans created an Old West painting for the Westside Pioneer's Page 1, timed for that year's Territory Days.
