Summer school, meals at 4 Westside schools; free food at Community Center too

Summer school classes, along with free breakfasts and lunches, are being offered this month at four Westside elementaries in District 11.
When summer school ends June 27, the federally funded food program will end as well at Bristol, Midland and West; however, it will continue at Jackson through Aug. 1.
Also offering free meals on the Westside is the Westside Community Center (through Aug. 15). The city-owned, privately run center has no public-school classes, but enough children come in for activities that D-11 started the food program there four summers ago and has kept it going.
Summer school is typically for students who need help in certain academic areas. Twelve D-11 schools in all are hosting summer school this year. All of them serve attendance areas with at least 75 percent Title 1 students. There are 19 schools in the district like that. As such, they are known as "Title 1 schools." Title 1 refers to a federal program in which, during the school year, students qualifying because of their parents' income get free or reduced-price lunches.
Bristol, Midland, Jackson and West are the four Title 1 schools on the Westside.
Of the 34 meal-giveaway sites this summer throughout the district, 14 of them are Title 1 schools.
A press release implies that without free food from the school district, the Title 1 students will face hunger issues in the summer. “Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition,” the release states. "Children who aren't hungry learn better, act better and feel better... Summer food programs provide nutritious meals to children."
The summer meals are prepared by School District 11 staff, using food bought by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Anyone up to age 18 can come to any of the sites during their specified breakfast and/or lunch time frames and eat for free, no questions asked.
The Westside Community Center is the only site in the district continuing past Aug. 1. The 2014-15 school year will start Aug. 18.
Here are the breakfast/lunch schedules for the five Westside locations:
       - Bristol Elementary, 890 N. Walnut St., through June 27 - breakfast, 7:30-7:55 a.m.; lunch, 11-11:30 a.m.
