Meet a Westsider:
Deb Komitor

Profession/Occupation... Oil painter. I have a studio in the Old Midland School.

What I like most about the Westside is... I love being so close to Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon and other parks – so many great places to walk the dog! Also, Old Colorado City has lots going on throughout the year. It’s just a great community on this side of town!

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... Better soil to grow gardens! I have had a heck of a time trying to grow anything in this soil. Just found out I actually killed our dirt. Didn’t know I could do that. Who knew???

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... We were going to go see a movie today so I could talk about the last good movie I saw but we are in the middle of a kitchen redo and got called home. It has been a long time since I’ve seen a movie, so no comment.

I'd like to discover... a really good, really healthy cookie, a doctor that will tell me the healthiest thing in the world is to eat more chocolate, a dog that does dishes and cats that do laundry, tubes of paint that never empty, the true meaning of life in a Dove Promise wrapper. Oh and some way to have a pony in my back yard.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Georgia O’Keeffe. I read so much about her in my 20s and 30s, I even had a great dream that we went flying in her Model T Ford and she showed me all her hangouts in NY. She was her own person and did things in her own way. She was authentic before anyone thought not to be.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Alaska and Oregon are the next places on my list. Then there’s Sedona, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon… It’s hard to get away sometimes, I’m very grateful to have Red Rock Canyon and Garden of the Gods so close. I can get a quickie vacation just hiking around here.

My favorite childhood memory is... When I was growing up in Ohio, the older kids told us there was a candy bird that lived in the tree and if we made a nest out of the fresh grass clippings he would fill it with candy. So we would build a nest and the older kids would go call the candy bird on the phone. When we went back it was full of cookies and candy! Little secret… I still build candy bird nests.

My favorite spring pastime is... getting out in the beautiful chartreuse green of spring, planting flowers and filling pots with fresh herbs, carrying the plants I protected all winter outside to enjoy the fresh air, enjoying meals on the deck and taking time to read outside. And then there is the excitement of the first rain of the season. I never grow tired of that smell!

Something good I’ve read is... “The Untethered Soul” by Michael Singer.

My pet peeve is... The word can’t. It is a very limiting word and keeps us in our safety zone. It is just the ego talking and filling in all the excuses and reasons of why we are stuck where we are. Perhaps I need to find a unique way of doing something but usually I can get around the “can’t.” And if I really can’t, I have learned to ask for help.

If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... OK, so how much would I get paid for not working? Would I have enough to travel to all those places I mentioned? Could I stay at each place for months and have a studio and paint all day? Maybe discover a really good healthy cookie recipe and build candy bird nests with my pet pony? I’d pick all that!
