Meet a Westsider:
Deborah Mathis

Profession/Occupation... Program Manager, DSM and Renewable Energy Solutions, Colorado Springs Utilities. My job is to get people to use less of what we sell.

What I like most about the Westside is... that everything I need is within a 2.5 mile radius – work, groceries, restaurants, shops, hiking – and I never have to drive on I-25!

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... the overhead utility lines. The views would be a lot better without them and it would make my apple tree happy. I think Manitou Springs looks great since they buried the lines there.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “August Rush.” I enjoyed the story line, but also the music. I'm taking guitar lessons right now and it is NOT as easy as they make it look.

The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... People were not too sure we should move to the West and we are glad we did!

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Richard Branson. Maybe he would let me tag along on some of his adventures.

The next time I travel, I’m going to... the British Virgin Islands for an offshore sailing school. Not real practical for Colorado, but it will give me an excuse to visit the ocean more often – not that I need an excuse!

My favorite childhood memory is... camping and canoeing with my family. We'd load up the car with the cooler and the dog and take off for the weekend… pretty much what I do these days, too… except my mom made better food.

My favorite spring pastime is... skiing and playing golf. The great thing about being in Colorado is that you can do both in the same weekend!

Something good I’ve read is.. “Eat, Pray, Love,” by Elizabeth Gilbert. I read it on the plane on my way to Italy – the first stop on the author's adventure in the book.

My pet peeve is... when people leave the water running.

If I won the lottery, I’d... start a nonprofit adventure travel company. I've been talking about it for years, but I don't have the courage to quit my job…. just yet.
