Westside schools:
Midland, Holmes hosting summer school

Midland Elementary and Holmes Middle School will be the only Westside schools hosting District 11 summer school classes this year.
Midland will host students who attended Bristol, Buena Vista, Washington and Whittier (also Ivywild) in 2008-09; and Holmes will host West (also North and half of Mann).
Intended for academically lagging students going into grades 1-8, classes will run from July 1 to 29.
The signup deadline was May 21, but there is a waiting list.
Other than students at host schools, students will be bused in. Transportation schedules are being developed.
Other Westside summer-schoolers will go to Trailblazer (Howbert and Jackson) and Bates (Pike).

Coronado High math students tied for first place in El Paso County and 12th place in the state recently in Colorado Math League competition.
The Coronado participants included Peter Jaron (who took eighth place individually), Devin Kimball, Garrett Seeman, Katie MacMillan and Kyle Yeh.
The math club advisors are Ileana Del Valle and John Morris.
Two Holmes Middle School students, Justin Ramsey and Aaliyah Rodriguez, won Awards of Merit in recent national-level judging of their entries in this year's PTA Reflections program.
Ramsey was honored for film production and Rodriguez for dance choreography.
The extracurricular program encourages students to create and submit works in different types of art.
Stanley Perko, who lived on the Westside in the 1950s and '60s and attended Pike Elementary from 1957 to 1964, has moved back to Colorado and is trying to get in touch with old classmates.
Perko attended the recent Pike farewell party and now lives in Pueblo West, he said.
He listed the following people he remembers: the Anderson family from Cooper Street (Tim, Karen, Sharon and Tina); the Porter family (especially Robert, Cathy, or Ken); the Burroughs family; Frank Scholdahl; Wilbur Myers; Larry Thompson; the Stoker family; the Hare Family; the Hartman family (especially Steven); and the Flemming family (especially Rodney).
