2 West Middle Schoolers win $1K scholarships in national math competition

West Middle School eighth-graders Brian Smith and Natalie Brooker each earned a $1,000 scholarship for math achievement this spring.
They were among 150 winners chosen from about 3,000 middle-schoolers who entered the annual, nationwide Math Moves U competition sponsored by the Raytheon Company, according to West math teacher Phil Hutcherson.
The judging was based on how effectively entrants could show how math applies to activities they like to do. The program theme is titled, “How Does Math Put the Action in Your Passion?”
Since 2010, Hutcherson has had a total of 14 students win Raytheon scholarships.
Another plus for West Middle is that Raytheon matches each scholarship award with $1,000 that goes to the student's school.
