OWN plans Neighbors Picnic, Spirit Awards at center July 20

Looking forward to its annual Neighbors Picnic July 20, the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) is seeking vendors as well as Spirit Award nominations.
The vendors will set up booths near the picnic, which will be on the Westside Community Center lawn. The hope is that the space rentals will help cover the picnic costs.
The Spirit Awards recognize people who have improved their properties in different ways, by building new, renovating, landscaping or (in the case of a business) upgrading signage. The awards will be given out during the picnic.
At the free event, OWN board members (and sometimes “guest celebrities”) barbecue for attendees, and a band plays.
OWN, the city-recognized advocacy group for the older Westside, finalized this year's picnic plans at a recent board meeting.

       In other OWN news…
Volunteers are welcome to join OWN members in cleaning up their adopted section of Fountain Creek and the Midland Trail (25th to 27th Street) Saturday, June 1 from 9 to 10 a.m.
The initial meeting place will be Vermijo Park near the community garden.
The main work will involve removing trash out of the creek. “Long handled rakes will be a boon,” the OWN website states. “We will also paint over a small patch of graffiti.”
