Westside schools:
Coronado musicians strike winning tune

       Coronado High School musicians and singers achieved several successes in competitions this spring.
       At the Winter Park Music Festival April 15, the Chamber Orchestra won the Grand Champion trophy, while the Jazz Band 2 and Symphonic Band both won awards for best in their class.
       At the Cavalcade of Music at the Pikes Peak Center April 22, both the Full Orchestra and Wind Ensemble received the highest possible ratings and first place in their divisions.
       The Bluenotes choir group won first place in the Jazz/A Capella category at the recent Heritage Festival in St. Louis, Mo. An outstanding soloist award went to Morgan Unruh.
      
       School District 11 will begin offering its annual summer food service program, with West Middle School designated on the Westside, starting May 24.
       The program, serving lower-income students who have qualified under the federal Title 1 program, provides free breakfast and lunch from District 11 Food and Nutrition Services, a press release states.
       West is at 1920 W. Pikes Peak Ave. The service dates are May 24 to July 30. The times are 8:30 to 9 a.m. (breakfast) and noon to 12:45 p.m. (lunch).
      
       The new Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning (AACL) has openings in its half-day kindergarten for the 2010-2011 school year. For more information, go to the school's website at academyacl.org or call 434-6566 for more information.
       The AACL program “particularly supports students who are advanced, creative, and gifted learners,” a press release states.
       AACL will open in August at the former Pike Elementary location, 2510 N. Chestnut. The school has enrolled 154 students and has waiting lists for most grade levels, the release adds.
