Also ceremonies for Westside 5th, 8th graders moving to next level

       Coronado High School, the flagship public high school for the Westside, will graduate 380 seniors May 19, and Westside fifth- and eighth-graders will have graduation/continuation ceremonies of their own in the days ahead as the 2003-04 school year comes to an end this month.
       Pending retentions, a total of 428 eighth-graders from Ivywild, Holmes and West middle schools will be moving on to high school in the fall.
       This is Ivywild's first eighth-grade graduating class since becoming a K-8 school this year. “I am very proud of them,” Principal Joe Madril said.
       In the eight Westside elementary schools combined, 240 fifth-graders will be heading to middle school. A list of the Westside schools and their graduation details follows:
       Coronado - The graduation ceremony for 380 Coronado High School seniors will be Wednesday, May 19 at the World Arena. The event, beginning at 9 a.m., will feature comments by District 11 Superintendent Dr. Norman Ridder, Board of Education member Karen Teja, Principal Susan Humphrey, faculty member Jill Haffley, Valedictorian Ben Koukol, Salutatorian Taryn Dukellis and Student Body President Grant Goerzen; and performances by the school's Brass & Percussion group, Shomber Choir, Band and Orchestra.
       Holmes - Celebration for 270 eighth-graders (pending retentions), 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 20 in the commons. Guest speaker will be Bill Shell, middle school executive director.
       West - Ceremony for 146 eighth-graders (pending retentions), 9 a.m. Friday, May 21 in the school gym. Guest speakers will be Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Cisneros and Coronado High School Principal Susan Humphrey.
       Ivywild - Graduating ceremony for 12 eighth-graders, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 20 in the school gym. Karin Reynolds, Palmer High School, principal, will be guest speaker. Also being honored are two teachers who earned the Troops to Teachers Teacher of the Year Award: Sharon Hicks (third grade) and Dan Forbeck (middle school science); and a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year: Leah Tuter (English as a second language).
       Howbert - Graduating ceremony for 31 fifth-graders, 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 21 at the school.
       Washington - “Farewell celebration” for 36 fifth-graders, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 at the school. A surprise guest speaker is planned, according to Principal Peter Cicatelli.
       Midland - “Recognition ceremony and banquet” for 19 fifth graders, 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20 at Tesla EOP Center, 2560 Educational Circle. Superintendent Ridder will be guest speaker.
       Buena Vista - Graduating ceremony for 29 fifth-graders, 6 p.m. Friday, May 14 in the school gym.
       Bristol - Graduating ceremony for 46 fifth-graders, 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 21 at the school.
       Pike - “Fifth grade celebration” for 14 fifth-graders, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 20 at the school.
       Jackson - Graduating ceremony for 42 fifth-graders,10 a.m. Friday, May 21 at the school.
       Whittier - Continuation ceremony for 23 fifth-graders, 9 a.m. Friday, May 21 at the school.
