Dressage event aids Paralympians, offers May 20 show
A May 18-21 dressage event at the Norris-Penrose Event Center's Indoor Arena will be highlighted by the third annual “An Evening Under the Lights” Saturday,
May 20, starting at 6 p.m. The event will feature a special riding exhibition with “upper-level riders and horses,” according to a press release from the Colorado
Springs Dressage Asso-ciation.
The featured judge will be Anita Owen, who was a judge in Athens for the 2004 Paralympics Dressage competition.
On May 18-19, there will be a dressage clinic in the center's nearby outdoor arena for about a dozen riders with physical disabilities. The clinic will be led by Jerry Schwartz, a national Paralympics coach. “This is a special opportunity for these riders,” said Heather Peterson, a Peyton resident who helped organize the clinic. “We scheduled it to help local riders get involved. It's a chance for them to meet the coaches and other riders.”
Other dressage riding is scheduled in the outdoor arena during the daytime May 20 and all day Sunday, May 21.
The “Evening Under the Lights” will be a fund-raiser for the paralympians as well as for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Foundation. Tickets are $10 at the gate, $7 in advance, and $5 for ages 11 and under. For more information, call 683-8435.
The Norris-Penrose Events Center is located at 1045 W. Rio Grande St.
