Ceremonies mark school year’s end

Coronado High will graduate 320 students in a ceremony May 21 at the World Arena.

The 2012-13 school year at Coronado High was made unique because of the summer Waldo Canyon Fire that destroyed 31 students' homes. School leaders came up with the slogan on this banner to help raise morale.

Also moving upward from 12th grade will be about 17 (pending final grades) at the Bijou School (alternative high school) in its last year at the old Whittier site. Bijou's graduation ceremony will be May 16 at Stargazers; also, the school is planning a farewell “luau,” open to the community, May 23 at 11 a.m.
Graduating seniors make up more than a third of the Westside's annual movement of District 11 students, from 12th, 8th and 5th grades. Overall, this year has 907 students in those categories.
Coronado's graduating class is 50 students larger than that of 2012 and the highest it's been in five years. A precise explanation for the jump is elusive - the boundary changes that will beef up its enrollment will not take effect until 2013-14.
Less radical changes (up or down) are seen in other Westside schools, most of which will have ceremonies for students moving up from kindergarten, 5th, 8th or 12th grades.
The Academy for Advanced & Creative Learning (ACL) and Buena Vista are the ceremony exceptions for fifth grade. The former is a K-8 charter school, so most students will be staying there. BV, as a Montessori school, has held fifth-grade ceremonies in the past, but this year it has a sixth grade of its own
The last day for nearly all D-11 elementary schoolers is May 20 and for middle/high schools May 23.
The exception is Academy ACL, which will continue with classes until May 30.
