City plans to finish water-main replacement work on Garden of the Gods Road in May

A Colorado Springs Utilities water-line replacement project down the middle of Garden of the Gods Road started in March and is expected to continue through the first week of May.
After that, Utilities crews will shift over to Centennial Boulevard to replace the water line there. That work will last until July, according to Mark Murphy, communications manager for City Utilities.
Both projects are needed to replace aging water mains that carry water to the entire city. The new pipes - 24 inches wide on Garden of the Gods and 16 inches on Centennial - are made of a longer-lasting material, Murphy said.
The Garden of the Gods Road work, starting near 30th Street and going east, has meant the loss of one of the three lanes in each direction during the daytime. Work also goes on at night, when traffic is lighter, at which time a second lane each way sometimes is lost, he said.
“It's a busy place. We're trying to improve service and get out of there as quickly as possible,” he said. At the same time, crews have to be careful in laying the new pipe because there are so many other utility lines, cable and fiber optic also going down the street, Murphy explained.
No service cutoffs have been necessary, he said.
