Westside poet Karen Sucharski will be featured at a poetry slam Wednesday, April 25, starting at 7 p.m. at the Java Buddha Coffee House, 2631 W. Colorado Ave.
The event, expected to attract 20 to 30 poet-performers, is free and open to the public.
Leader of the Colorado Springs Poetry Slam group, Sucharski teaches poetry at three area schools, including Manitou Springs High School. She also has performed and taught performance poetry for the past four years around Colorado.
A poetry slam is a competition in which poets perform for prizes, with judges deciding the winners.
Westside children are invited to register for a free, four-week Aqua Fitness and Nutrition Program, offered by the Thriving Child Corp. at the Manitou Springs Pool, 202 Manitou Ave., starting Monday, April 30. The program, which will address problems with youth obesity, is open to the first 25 children who sign up.
According to Colleen Hurley of Thriving Child, the program “combines family nutrition education with swimming games and basic swimming stroke instruction (three days a week). The nutrition education sessions are taught by highly qualified registered dietitians and are customized to appeal to the proper age level (separate programs for parents and children ages 8 through 12).”
