Westside schools:
Combined feeder bands at West

Band students from the West Middle School feeder elementaries will perform together in the West gym Tuesday, April 22.
The free concert will begin at 6:30 p.m.
From 90 to 130 elementary students are expected to participate in the show, which will be preceded by about two hours of school touring, clinics, pizza and a chance to meet West band instructor David Foster.
The feeder schools are Bristol, Buena Vista, Jackson, Midland. Whittier and Washington. (Buena Vista and Bristol feed into both the West and Holmes attendance areas.)
Another participating school will be Rogers Elementary, a District 11 school east of downtown. The West sixth-grade band will also play, according to Chris Welch, band instructor at Whittier and organizer. of the event.
According to Welch, the band students at the different elementaries have been learning the same four songs, and those are the ones they will perform together. “It will be a good experience for them,” he said. “Most of the Westside schools are small. They don't get the opportunity to play in a big group like this.”
Howbert Elementary will have a “Spring Festival of the Arts” Thursday, April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Organized by the school's PTA, the event will feature music by the Howbert band, orchestra and choir, as well as art (two pieces from every student). There also will be a fundraiser - auctioning a “basket” of donated items from each grade level, according to Karen Petersilie of the PTA.
The school is at 1023 N. 31st St. For more information, call 328-4200.
