Camping issues spur Little Britches to move Finals to Pueblo this year
If Kelli Jackson had been National Little Britches Rodeo Association (NLBRA) queen in past years, she would be coming back
to Colorado Springs this summer to preside over the annual NLBRA Finals Rodeo at Penrose Stadium in what is now the
Norris-Penrose Events Center. However, this year that event is moving to the Pueblo State Fairgrounds.
The decision to move to Pueblo was not a knock on the Penrose Stadium management, but based on the reality that there was insufficient on-site camping at the 2004 event last July, explained Lori Baker of NLBRA media relations.
Many of the roughly 700 competitors came with campers and RVs, and these numbers far exceeded the complex's 52 hook- ups. “They camped on the roadside down to Wal-Mart and in the parking lots,” Baker said. “It was muddy, just a mess.”
Pueblo not only has more space , it has a “lot more indoor buildings, so if it does rain, we can get out of it,” she said.
Despite the move, the NLBRA headquarters will remain at Norris-Penrose, Baker said.
