Holmes student qualifies for State Geographic Bee

Mara Abernethy, an eighth-grader at Holmes Middle School, competed April 4 in the Colorado State Geographic Bee.
She had qualified as a semifinalist for the event, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
“The State Geographic Bee is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition,” a press release explains. “To determine each school's winner, bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state. School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The Society invited the students with the top 100 scores in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U. S. territories to compete at the state level.”
The winner of the Colorado event earned $100 and a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete for the national title in May.
