What do you do?
Janice Rosebush

Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the office manager at the Westside Community Center.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I like to say I'm the Westside Community Center “hostess”! I am responsible for many administrative tasks, but the joy of my position comes from interacting with the public.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I began working for the West Center for Intergenerational Learning in 1999 when that community center was housed in West Middle School. I was part of the staff that moved to the center's new location in the former Buena Vista elementary school in June 2009, and I continue there today.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
My favorite part of the job is the people! I get to work with the best people in the world – both the staff and our program participants. It's a pleasure to walk into the building every day.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
It’s an old building and although the city contracted technicians are quick to respond, our offices are usually way too hot or way too cold. Other than that, I wish I could change it so more people knew about the amazing things at the Westside Community Center. We offer everything from yoga, exercise classes, line dance and ping pong to family fun days and Saturday fun for middle and high school ages.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
It's something different every day, but I enjoy the flexibility and variety.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I get to interact with very interesting and fun Westsiders. For instance, my best days include seeing my 98-year-old friend Grace, my lunch buddy John and community center “pest” Shirley. My day wouldn't be complete without them.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
