Meet a Westsider:
I'm an online science teacher for District 11 and a small-business owner (Buckley's Homestead Supply).
What I like most about the Westside is... There are so many reasons why I love living on the Westside. I love the diversity, the sense of community, the old architecture and the thriving small-business community.
If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... having the houses restored. There are a few that have been vacant for years and I always dream about what they looked like in their heyday. However, it's a classic careful-what-you-wish-for. I've gotten excited watching construction start on some of them only to find that they were not restored, but completely gutted and modernized.
A good movie I’ve seen recently is... The last movie I saw was “Hyde Park on the Hudson.” It was my first time going to the Kimball's theater downtown, and I absolutely love that place!
I'd like to discover... an affordable renewable energy source. I think solar and wind are promising, but there are still some major problems, either monetary or environmental, that need to be figured out.
If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... I would probably choose Barbara Kingsolver. I've been hooked on her books since I first read “The Bean Trees” in college. I love her writing style.
The next time I travel, I’m going... Missouri to see family. I'd like to eventually make it to more exciting places.
My favorite childhood memory is... I don't have one particular favorite childhood memory. My favorite memories come from the summers that I spent on my grandparents' farm. They had horses, chickens, goats, deer and llamas. We'd get there just in time for the baby chicks to arrive. I would leave the house at daybreak and wouldn't get back until dinner.
My favorite winter pastime is... planning for spring. It's never too early to get the garden laid out on paper. Every spring we start a new project for the yard. This year we're planning on building a cob bench that is heated with a rocket mass heater.
Something good I’ve read is... “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle,” by Barbara Kingsolver. I'm actually right in the middle of it, but I'm loving it. My goal is to try to do the same local-only/eating-with-the-season challenge with my family. I better get ahead on my spring planning!
My pet peeve is... how into cell phones people are these days. I hate going into a room and seeing everyone looking at their screens instead of interacting with the people that are feet away from them.
If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... I'd travel. When I was younger, I used to jump in the car at a moment's notice and just drive with no destination. I miss the adventure. I'd love to make it to Ireland one day so that I can see the land and tie up some loose ends with our genealogy.
