Meeting on camp ‘sweep’ procedure March 31
Homeless sweeps are now expected to resume in April, after a public meeting on a new policy that's scheduled Tuesday, March 31.
The informal session is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. in the community room of the Colorado Springs Police Department's Gold Hill station, 955 W. Moreno Ave.
Called at the request of Colorado Springs City Council, the meeting is a chance for all community groups to have a clear understanding of an amended procedure that provides wider notice and less police presence than in the past and provides a written policy for handling misplaced, potentially valuable items. The procedure was worked out by police in conjunction with three community meetings since October.
It was at that time that city officials temporarily terminated the monthly sweeps by police and the contracted agency, Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful to ensure the city practices did not violate constitutional rights. The sweeps pick up the trash - sometimes including alcohol or drug items - that transient campers leave behind at unauthorized campsites. On the Westside, these are most often found along Fountain Creek.
According to Gold Hill Commander Kurt Pillard, the sweeps should start up again soon after the meeting, using the new procedure.
