What do you do?
Randy Fair

Where do you work and what is your title?
I own the Jives Coffee Lounge in Old Colorado City. We are a coffee shop with signature lattes, pastries, smoothies and sandwiches.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I am responsible for everything from the vibe to scheduling the music to the new seasonal signature lattes. You may you find me behind the counter or sitting on stage with my guitar. I really love everything about working at the shop, and if I had my way I would be the main barista!
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
About three years, all here on the Westside at Jives. Previously, I was the world’s biggest coffee consumer, serving friends and family the best cappuccinos I could muster for the last 15 years at home.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I absolutely love creating community and connections with all my regular and new customers. There is nothing cooler than having that real personal connection with people.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I would create more environments for folks to connect with each other and my family. We are currently working on that dream!
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
All the moving parts! Retail food is amazingly more complex and fragmented than I would have ever guessed. I love it, but at times it can be overwhelming and it hurts when I fail to be a blessing to a customer because we run out of something.
What makes working on the Westside special?
The diversity of folks in our community. Liberals, Conservatives, Hippies, Young, Old, White, Black, Rich, Poor, Artsy, Christian, Pagan, and everything all mixed up. I’m lots of those rolled in one, and I dig getting to know all the other fun folks around here.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
