Four left in Coronado principal search

       The search for a new Coronado High School principal has been narrowed to four people.
       After the number of initial applicants was reduced to five by District 11 administrative staff, the list was narrowed to four after interviews by groups representing Coronado students, staff and the community Feb. 27. Also that evening, citizens at large got a chance to ask questions of those four and submit their reactions during a planned two-hour “meet-and- interact” session.
       The final selection will be made by Superintendent Nick Gledich,, who is scheduled to interview the remaining applicants March 5 and 6. The District 11 Board of Education could formally approve his choice at its March 12 meeting.
        Current Coronado Principal Marcia Landwehr announced previously that she will be retiring after this school year.
       Here are capsule summaries on the final four:
  • Kevin Gardner, resident of Cedaredge. Principal at Cedaredge High since 2012. Taught 10 years previously, including at Coronado in the 1990s.
  • Jerry Monks, resident of Limon. Assistant principal at Mitchell High since 2010. Principal of Calhan High School from 2007 to 2010. Also a local artist who shows at the Squash Blossom Gallery.
  • Darin Smith, resident of Pleasant Valley. Assistant principal at Coronado High since 2010; science teacher at Coronado from 2005-2010 and previously at Fountain-Fort Carson Middle School and Palmer and Wasson high schools.
  • Nancy Smith, resident of Colorado Springs (80923 zipcode). Principal of Audobon Elementary since 2004 and assistant principal of Wasson High from 2000 to 2004. Taught elementary school from 1994 to 1998.
