Westside schools:
Coronado jazz concert to benefit Castle West

The Coronado High Jazz Band concert Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. has become a benefit concert, with proceeds going to the Red Cross for the victims of the Castle West apartment fire.
Tickets will be $2 per person, and can be purchased at the door or from a band student. The concert will be at the Coronado High School auditorium at 1590 West Fillmore St.
We would love to have a large turnout to generate some help for the fire victims,” said band instructor Alan Combs, “and to have a good audience to enjoy some good live music, so please come and bring as many friends as possible.”
Whittier Elementary will host an informational meeting for its EAGLES program Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 5 to 6 p.m.
EAGLES is a gifted magnet classroom available to students in grades 3 to 5 who test at higher levels.
The school is at 2904 W. Kiowa St. For more information, call 328-4900.
Holmes Middle School language arts teacher Gary Hardy's students wrote thank-you letters to soldiers and veterans again this year, then read them on the air at a local radio station. According to District 11's newsletter, the Communicator, Hardy, a military veteran, “started this wonderful tribute to soldiers on Veterans Day three years ago, and he hopes to keep the tradition going for years to come.”
