Hilty receives honorary UCCS degree

Holland Park resident Vickie Hilty recently received an honorary degree from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS).
The award recognizes her 26-year service at the university, from which she retired as personnel director Jan. 31. Overall, she worked 34 years for the State of Colorado.
Hilty had taken classes at both UCCS and Regis University, but a traffic accident that eventually left her in a wheelchair cut short her college career. “I had problems with my back and never finished,” she said.
She believes she is the first UCCS employee to receive such an award.
She remembers a very different UCCS campus from her early days. “Enrollment was significantly less, and four of the buildings weren't there at the time,” she said.
Now, with more free time, Hilty said she may expand her volunteer activities. She is currently on the board of Cheyenne Village.
