1st event in Garden gift centennial

An “inaugural press conference” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the gift of Garden of the Gods Park to the City of Colorado Springs is scheduled Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009

Looking north from Red Rock Canyon Open Space, some of the Garden of the Gods' most striking rock formations can be seen.

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center, 1805 North 30th St.
Presenters will include Mayor Lionel Rivera, as well as representatives of the Southern Ute Tribe, the National Park Service, and Colorado Springs Parks Advisory Board.
Music will be performed by the Colorado Springs Conservatory and students of Howbert Elementary School in nearby Pleasant Valley.
The short ceremony will hardly be the only event this year recognizing the centennial of the city's accepting the donation of the park from the Perkins family. “This is just to get it started,” City Parks Director Paul Butcher said. “There will be more when the tourist season comes.”
The press conference will provide information about the “upcoming venues and events to highlight this generous addition to the landscape of Colorado Springs,” a press release states.
