Westside schools:
3rd annual West Elementary carnival

       West Elementary will host its third annual winter carnival Friday, Feb. 3.
       Open to the community, the fundraising event will feature games - including ones with prize opportunies, such as the cake walk and soda-pop bottle ring toss - in classrooms as well as the gymnasium.
       The time span is 5:30 to 8 p.m.
       The school is in the same building as West Middle School, with its entrance at 25 N. 20th St.
       West Elementary is in its third year, having been created to take in students primarily from Whittier and Washington schools after they closed in 2009.
       Game tickets can be bought in advance for a discount (5 for $1 or 60 for $10). Prices at the door will be 4 for $1 or 50 for $10. Five tickets will also buy a hot dog meal.

       Charter open house
       The Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning, a District 11 Charter School for gifted students, will host an open house Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
       Featured will be a presentation by Academy Director Nikki Myers, titled “Twixt and Tweens - Keeping Learning Alive in Adolescence.”
       The school is at 2510 N Chestnut St.
       Classrooms will be open with teachers present and hands-on activities for visiting students.

       D-11 budget talks
       As part of District 11's “financial transparency” effort, Chief Financial Officer Glenn Gustafson is giving public evening presentations (and seeking feedback) at different schools regarding D-11's envisioned $9 million budget shortfall for the 2012-13 fiscal year.
