Arrest of man suspected of setting 4 fires around West Colorado's 3000 block

A 68-year-old man has been arrested in connection with four grass fires set over the weekend (between late Jan. 22 and early Jan. 24) on open land around the 3000 block of West Colorado Avenue.
Following a joint police/fire investigation, Manuel Rascon was charged with two counts of second-degree arson, one a Class 4 felony and the other a Class 2 misdemeanor.
No one was injured and no buildings were burned, but “the fires endangered firefighters and threatened three unoccupied structures in the area,” a press release states.
The fires were set in a “wooded area owned by the City of Colorado Springs,” the release adds.
A few days earlier, there had been grass fires of unknown origin in two other Westside locations (off 19th Street and Friendship Lane). However, police “have not made a connection yet” with those two blazes and “some smaller ones near Eighth Street,” according to police spokesperson Catherine Buckley.
