3 seats open in annual OWN election Jan. 27

Residents and homeowners in the Westside's Neighborhood Strategy Area (NSA) are eligible to vote in an annual election for three seats on the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) board.
The voting will take place Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St., at an OWN membership meeting starting at 7 p.m.
Board members are elected to three-year terms. Open are Areas 3 and 5 and At-large 3. There are nine board members in all (three at-large and six serving specific geographic areas of the NSA.
Incumbents Sean Chambers (District 5, OWN vice president), Chris Baum (At-large 3, OWN secretary) and Brad Collins (Area 3) all indicated at the Jan. 13 OWN board meeting that they would like to retain their posts.
Prospective candidates can offer their names for consideration at the meeting. For information before the meeting, contact OWN President Welling Clark by e-mail at welling80904@yahoo.com or by phone at 471-4740.
       Also scheduled at the meeting:
  • Presentation by El Paso County Commissioner Sallie Clark about county projects on the Westside.
  • Update on the Westside historic overlay effort. OWN plans to meet with the city's Historic Preservation Board in hopes of moving forward on a volunteer overlay concept
  • Update on vacation home rentals. This concerns homes in neighborhoods that are used for vacation rentals, without the owners having to go through the same level of government oversight that's applied to bed & breakfast businesses.
Partially funded by federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds allocated to the Westside NSA through the city Housing Office, OWN is the city- recognized advocacy group for the older Westside.
