Meet a Westsider:
Sandy Hanzlian

Profession/Occupation... retired public school teacher from New York State. I volunteer at the Old Colorado City History Center and babysit my grandson one or more days per week.

What I like most about the Westside is... the small-town, close-neighborhood feel. There is a uniqueness to this part of the Springs, where tolerance prevails.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I would like to see the roads better maintained.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... The remake of “True Grit” was very well done. Jeff Bridges gave another marvelous performance and Matt Damon was very believable. The young girl, Hailee Steinfeld, who played the daughter seeing justice for her father’s killing, was excellent.

I'd like to discover... a process to accomplish universal literacy and a love for reading. I believe really understanding the written word elevates a person.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Madeline Albright. She entered a “man’s world” and was accomplished and well respected.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Having moved to the West less than six years ago, I am enjoying traveling in the West. I have a dear friend who resides in California and that may be my next destination.

My favorite childhood memory is... My parents purchased land southeast of Buffalo, New York, and we spent many years developing and enjoying it. It was near many dairy farms, and in the early morning we could hear the cows. One morning we woke to our neighbor’s horses on the front lawn next to the swimming pool.

My favorite winter pastime is... sitting on my back patio reading and watching the wildlife that frequent our open land.

Something good I’ve read is... Two of my all-time favorites are “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Of Mice and Men.” Over the last couple of years, I have read a series of historical novels by Howard Fast. The first of the series was entitled, “The Immigrants,” followed with five more works chronologically capturing a family’s progression in America.

My pet peeve is... drivers who tailgate, junk mail and telephone solicitors.

If I won the lottery I’d... Oh, if I won the lottery I would make sure all of my bills and my family’s bills were paid and future needs were met. I would travel (without searching for the most economical deals) and set up donations to my favorite charities.
