What do you do?
Harvey ‘Banty’ Hoover

Where do you work and what is your title?
I work at the Uncharted Waters Sports Ministry, an international ministry that produces coaching and training manuals, music, Bible studies, curriculum guides and coaches and staff for use by churches in their sports programs. I am a development coordinator.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I assist the CEO/president of the Uncharted Waters board in forging new relationships and with special projects and public relations.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I was one of three co-founders of the organization, which we started on the Westside in 1996. I have personally lived on the Westside for 22 years.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
Because we use sports as an outreach, we conduct sports camps at various churches. As a coach, I get the opportunity to work with boys and girls as their lives are touched and potentially changed forever.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
One thing I would change would be not having to raise funds; instead, being supported by a major philanthropy group, so that we could focus more on direct ministry outreach.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I was a business major and owned and operated restaurants for 20 years, owned a mortage company and have done volunteer work. However, no amount of training or education can ever prepare one for an encounter with the Holy Spirit!
What makes working on the Westside special?
The best part of living on the Westside is the proximity to the mountains (skiing) and followed by the great many opportunities to share the word with so many people of diverse beliefs here on the Westside.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
