International affairs discussion group to hold first meeting at OCC Library Jan. 14

A new discussion group on international affairs will hold a “get-acquainted” meeting Wednesday, Jan. 14 in the downstairs meeting room at the Old Colorado City Library, 2418 W. Pikes Peak Ave.
The time frame will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Participants are welcome.
Called the Great Decisions discussion group, the format was developed by the Foreign Policy Association, a 96-year-old national organization that defines itself as “balanced [and] nonpartisan.” According to the FPA website, its mission is to “serve as a catalyst for developing awareness, understanding and informed opinion on U.S. foreign policy and global issues.”
The program is being coordinated by a local couple who are not part of FPA but participated in a Great Decisions group previously in another city. “My husband [Tom] I are everyday citizens of Colorado Springs who enjoy the discussion group and wanted to see it offered here in the Springs,” explained Mary Mourar. “The materials that the FPA provides are great for increasing participants' knowledge on the topics and the complexities of the issues. We also feel it is a great way to meet other people.”
There is no fee to attend, but the association's Briefing Book “is highly recommended,” Mourar said. The cost is $22 plus shipping and handling, It can be ordered through the FPA website: http://fpa.org/great_decisions.
After the initial Jan. 14 get-together, the group will meet eight times, each session addressing a different area/issue in the world. The planned dates are the second and fourth Wednesdays.
The eight Great Decisions topics for 2015 are: Russia and the Near Abroad (Ukraine, etc.), Sectarianism in the Middle East, Privacy in the Digital Age, India Changes Course, U.S. Policy in Africa, Syria's Crisis, Human Trafficking in the 21st Century and Brazil's Metamorphosis.
